A Brief History of Guess Road Baptist Church
Guess Road Baptist Church was organized on August 26, 1945 following a tent revival on a lot that had been purchased on the corner of Kirk and Guess Roads for the sum of one thousand dollars. Rev. B.E. Morris conducted the revival and was sponsored by the Durham Baptist Council. There were eleven charter members. others joined before the charter was closed on October of 1945, making a total of twenty-nine members.
Rev. B.E. Morris was the first acting pastor and served faithfully from August 26, 1945 until March 3, 1946. Miss Cora Lee Cannon served as Missionary and Personal Worker from August 26, 1945 until September 12, 1946.
Supply Pastors ministered to the church during this interim period. Baptist Council Missionary Rev. Lynch, came as acting pastor, serving Guess Road from November of 1946 until July of 1947. A full-time pastor was called at this time.
Hillandale School was used as a place of worship from September 1945 until March of 1946. At this time, services were moved to the basement of the new Pastorium until the Educational Building was built and occupied on March 13, 1949. In 1956, the second phase of the building was started. On October 5, 1958, the ground breaking ceremony was held for the new sanctuary. Dedication of the building was October 25, 1959.
